Patient Preparation

Patient should discontinue taking Biotin, Vitamin B7, or Vitamin H 48 hours before getting blood drawn


Specimen Requirements:

2.0 mL Serum in a SST Gold Top Tube
Minimum Volume:
1.0 mL Serum*

* This volume does not allow for repeat testing

Transport and Storage:

  • Refrigerated (2-8°C): 14 Days
  • Frozen (-20° C or colder): 6 Months

Clinical Interpretation

Reference Range:

Male: 2 - 18 ng/mL

Female 
Non-Pregnant: 3 - 30 ng/mL
Pregnant: 10 - 209 ng/mL
Post Menopausal: 2 - 20 ng/mL

 

10-fold and 100-fold dilution produced results consistent with the absence of high-dose hook effect.


Test Comments:

Patients taking vitamin supplements containing doses of > 5mg/day may have falsely decreased test results generated. Total prolactin measured using the Roche Cobas e immunoassay analyzer.
