Urine collected during a 24 hour time period

  • Instruct the patient what time collection is to be started (ie. 8:00 AM).
  • At this time, the patient should empty their bladder and discard the urine.
  • All urine thereafter should be collected for 24 hours.
  • The bladder should also be emptied 24 hours after collection was started (ie. at 8:00 AM the following day) and this urine included in the 24 hour collection.
  • Label the container with Full Legal Name, Date of Birth, and Date Collection started.
  • Many tests require 24 hour collections and some are just slightly different than the other. These specific instructions will be offered within the testing information
  • The process of this collection is the same as a regular 24 hour urine collection, the difference is the container. The collection container should be an Acid-washed container.
  • Acid-washed containers are essential for specific laboratory tests, especially those involving trace-level analysis.  By using acid-washed containers, any residual traces are removed, ensuring reliable results. For instance, in toxicology, acid-washed containers are used for determinations of aluminum, chromium, manganese, selenium, copper, and zinc in plasma. These precautions prevent interference and maintain the integrity of the samples.
