Instruct the patient what time collection is to be started (ie. 8:00 AM).
At this time, the patient should empty their bladder and discard the urine.
All urine thereafter should be collected for 24 hours.
The bladder should also be emptied 24 hours after collection was started (ie. at 8:00 AM the following day) and this urine included in the 24 hour collection.
Label the container with Full Legal Name, Date of Birth, and Date Collection started.
Many tests require 24 hour collections and some are just slightly different than the other. These specific instructions will be offered within the testing information
The process of this collection is the same as a regular 24 hour urine collection, the difference is the container. The collection container should be an Acid-washed container.
Acid-washed containers are essential for specific laboratory tests, especially those involving trace-level analysis. By using acid-washed containers, any residual traces are removed, ensuring reliable results. For instance, in toxicology, acid-washed containers are used for determinations of aluminum, chromium, manganese, selenium, copper, and zinc in plasma. These precautions prevent interference and maintain the integrity of the samples.
