Provider must supply patient with the jelly beans


Patient Preparation

12 hours fasting prior to collection

Smoking, drinking, gum chewing, mints, cough drops, etc. are not allowed during the duration of the test.

Medications may still be taken as ordered by the physician. 


Specimen Requirements:

 1.0 mL Plasma in a PST Mint Green Top Tube - Li Heparin
Minimum Volume:
0.25 mL Plasma*

* This volume does not allow for repeat testing

Collection Instructions:

1. Have patient consume 28 "Brach" jelly beans within 10 minutes.
1a. The patient may consume the jelly beans prior to arriving in the lab, but must present with sufficient time to register, prior to blood collections which should occur exactly 1 hour after eating the jelly beans. 
2. Start timing the test after the patient finishes the jelly beans. 


Processing Instructions:

Centrifuge and separate from cells within 4 hours of collection

  • Ambient (18-24°C): 8 Hours
  • Refrigerated (2-8°C): 3 Days
