Specimen Collection & Preparation

Patient Preparation

Patient should discontinue taking Biotin, Vitamin B7, or Vitamin H 48 hours before getting blood drawn.


Specimen Requirements:

-OR-

1.0 mL Plasma in a PST Mint Green Top Tube - Li Heparin
Minimum Volume:
0.25 mL Plasma*

* This volume does not allow for repeat testing

Collection Instructions:

Specimen should be drawn at least 4 hours after IV Dose or 6 hours after oral dose. Optimal time is 12 - 24 hours after oral dose. 


Transport and Storage:
  • Ambient (18-24°C): 7 Days
  • Refrigerated (2-8°C): 14 Days
  • Frozen (-20° C or colder): 6 Months

Clinical Interpretation

Reference Range:

0.9 - 2.0 ng/mL


Critical Ranges:

High: > 2.5 ng/mL


Test Comments:

Patients taking vitamin supplements containing high doses of biotin (>5 mg/day) may have falsely increased test results generated.
