Clinical Significance

Diagnose imflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.  Differentiate IBD from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)


Specimen Collection & Preparation

Specimen Requirements

3 gm Unpreserved solid Feces in a sterile container


Alternate Specimen

1 gm Random Liquid or semi-liquid Feces in a sterile container
Or 
1 gram stool in a Non-sterile leak-proof container such as a  yellow non-sterile container is acceptable.  The Non-sterile container must be provided by the ordering provider or laboratory, and can not be a container from patients home.

Collection Instructions

Collect undiluted feces in clean, dry, sterile leak-proof container.  

Do not add fixative.

Neonatal Volumne

Clinical Interpretation

Reference Range:

Normal: < 80 mg/g
Borderline: 80 - 160 mg/g
Abnormal: > 160 mg/g


Test Comments:

NSAID's may cause elevated results.
