Specimen Requirements

8.0 mL Urine in a Yellow Conicial Tube
 


Alternate Specimen

Endocervical Swab in Pink Xpert Swab Specimen Collection Kit 

Female Cervical Collection:
  1.  Use CT/NG Vaginal/Endocervical Specimen Collection Kit (pink top transport tube)
  2. Remove excess mucus from the cervix using the large cleaning swab.  Discard this swab.
  3. Open the package containing the pink capped Swab Transport Tube and collection swab.
  4. Insert the collection swab into the endocervical canal and rotate 10-30 seconds.
  5. Withdraw the swab and place into the Transport tube.
  6. Break the swab shaft at the score line and securely recap the Transport tube.
  7. Label the transport tube with sample identification information including 2 unique patient identifiers.
  8. Send to the laboratory at room temperature.

6.0 mL Urine in a Clear Red Top Tube - No Clot Activator
  miniumum: 5.0 mL Urine

Patient should not urinate for at least one hour prior to collecting the specimen.  Female patients should not cleanse the labial area prior to collecting the specimen.  Collect the first catch urine (approximately 20-50 mL of the initial urine stream) into a urine collection cup free of any preservatives.

Clinical Interpretation

Reference Range:

Negative for Chlamydia trachomatis by amplified probe


Test Comments:

For patient less than 12 years of age - Culture is the only recommended procedure for diagnosing chlamydial or gonorrheal infection in cases of suspected child abuse.
