Indwelling Catheter: Indwelling catheters are placed in patients who are unable to pass urine. If the patient is ordered to have the indwelling catheter changed + urine analysis/culture done, the urine sample will be analyzed from the new indwelling catheter. To obtain a sample from an indwelling catheter:
a) Clean the catheter collection port with 70% alcohol wipe.
b) Scrub needless access port for 15 seconds and allow to dry. (Note: Do not collect urine from collection bag.)
c) Aspirate the urine, and place it in a sterile container.
Scrub needless access hub for 15 seconds with alcohol and allow to dry. Access hub with sterile syringe and withdraw urine specimen.
