Clinical Significance

Enterobius vermicularis is a human pinworm that typically infects children and other family members. It is probable that Enterobius causes no symptoms in the majority of infected adults and children.


Specimen Collection & Preparation

Patient Preparation

Collect the specimen when the patient first awakens (preferably when it is still dark outside) and prior to the patients urinating or bathing.

Collection Instructions

1. Collect the specimen when the patient first awakens (preferably when it is still dark outside) and prior to the patients urinating or bathing.
                       
2. Pull the pinworm swube paddle device apart into its three pieces, being careful to first note that one side of the paddle is labeled “sticky side” and second, not to touch this “sticky side” of the paddle with your fingers.
                       
NOTE: The words “STICKY SIDE” are etched on the paddle above the sticky surface.
 
3. Using a rocking motion, press the sticky side of the paddle collection device across the anal area.
 
4. Put the device back together; again being careful not to touch the sticky collection area of the paddle with your fingers.
 
5. Wash hands after collection
 
6. Specimen should be labeled with patient’s full legal name, a unique identifier (the unique identifier could be the Date Of Birth, Social Security, Driver’s License Number and must be on the specimen and requisition to qualify as unique identifier), date and time of collection.
 
7. Bring the specimen to the laboratory at your earliest convenience. This specimen is stable for 72 hours.
