Medical Necessity Documentation: Due to reagent backorder, this test will temporarily be sent to Mayo Clinic Laboratories for testing using test “Serotonin Release Assay, Unfractionated Heparin, Mass Spectrometry, Serum (SRAU).  Please contact the Lab Sendout department at 266-1600 with questions about this temporary testing change

Specimen Requirements: 1.0 mL frozen Serum from a Red Top Tube in a Plastic Vial

Minimum Volume: 0.4 mL frozen Serum

Rejection Criteria: Room temperature, refrigerated
Reference Range: A sample is considered negative if there is < 20% release.

Methodology: Radiobinding 14C Serotonin Radiolabel
Clinical Significance: Any patient with an unexplained fall in the platelet count of > 40% during or after cessation of heparin therapy should be suspected of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT).
