Patient Preparation: The patient must not use barium products, antacids, antidiarrheal medications, or laxatives containing oil before collection of specimen for parasitological exam.
Specimen Requirements: 10 grams Stool in Pink Vial from an O&P Kit contains10% Formalin
Collection Instructions: The specimen must be passed into a clean, dry container and must not be contaminated with urine.

Rejection Criteria: Unpreserved stool; Stool in Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA); BLUE CAP BOTTLE IN O&P KIT; Specimens received frozen.
Reference Range: No Cryptosporidium oocysts seen
Test Comments: There are 3 possible reports for this test:
1) No Cryptosporidium oocysts seen;
2) Cryptosporidium oocysts seen;
3) Giardia lamblia cysts seen.
The Cryptosporidium direct immunofluorescen stain will also detect Giardia lamblia, but only when cysts are present. For the most sensitive method of Giardia lamblia diagnosis, which detects Giardia specific antigen, use test order code 8625X_[3471], Giardia Antigen EIA.

immunocompromised.
