Patient Preparation: Patient should refrain from taking vitamins or mineral supplements at least three days prior to specimen collection
Specimen Requirements:  2.0 mL Serum from a Navy Blue Top Tube - No Additive in a trace element Plastic Vial
Collection Instructions: Carefully clean skin prior to venipuncture.
Avoid worksite collection.
Centrifuge serum specimens within 1 hour of collection.
Immediately separate serum specimens from the cells into trace element collection vial(s).

Clinical Significance: Selenium - Selenium is an element of parenteral nutrition. Monitoring the Selenium concentration is useful in assessing parenteral nutrition, especially recent intake. Concentrations are also monitored in children with propionic acidemia who require special diets with supplements
