Specimen Collection & Preparation

Specimen Requirements:

5.0 mL Feces in a sterile container
Minimum Volume:
2.0 mL Stool*

* This volume does not allow for repeat testing

Collection Instructions:

  1. Stool specimen should be collected in a commode (toilet) hat, or a disposable clean container, without preservatives or detergents.
  2. Wash hands after collection.
  3. Specimen should be labeled with full legal patient name, date of birth, date and time of collection.
  4. The specimen should be brought to the laboratory as soon as possible for testing or refrigerated no longer than 72 hours. 

For pediatric patients and those requiring use of diapers: 

  1. The stool may be collected from a diaper.
    1. Line the diaper with plastic wrap to prevent absorbsion.
      1. Formed stool can be scooped into a clean container with a sterile swab or wooden stick. 
      2. Liquid stool place plastic wrap with stool specimen into the clean container.
    2. Do not submit the diaper itself.
