Specimen Collection & Preparation

Patient Preparation

Overnight fasting is preferred
Patient must be restricted from alcohol and vitamins for at least 24 hours before sample collection.


Specimen Requirements:

-OR-

1.0 mL Plasma from a Lavender Top Tube - EDTA in a Amber Vial
Minimum Volume:
0.5 mL Plasma*

* This volume does not allow for repeat testing

Processing Instructions:

Centrifuge and separate plasma from cells immediately. If cant be separated from cells immediately keep whole blood refrigerated for up to 6 hrs before spinning.

Protect from light (PFL); pipette the plasma into an Amber Vial or send to PRMC Lab in a Amber Bag.

Ambient specimen

Refigerated specimen

Hemolized specimen

Lipemic specimen

Received on a Green Top Heparin Tube

Not protected from light


Transport and Storage:
  • Frozen (-20° C or colder): 6 Days
