Patient Preparation:
Specimen Requirements: 1.0 mL Frozen Plasma from each of 4 Blue Top Tubes - 3.2% Na Citrate in a 4 Plastic Vials
Collection Instructions: Centrifuge light blue-top tubes for 15 minutes at approx. 1500 g within 60 minutes of collection.
Using a plastic pipette, remove plasma, taking care to avoid the WBC/platelet buffy layer and place into a plastic vial.
Centrifuge a second time and transfer platelet-poor plasma into a new plastic vial.
Plasma must be free of platelets (<10,000/mcL).
Freeze immediately and ship on dry ice.

Note:
Storage of whole blood at refrigerated temperatures prior to processing may lead to cryoprecipitate formation and falsely low Factor VIII and von Willebrand Factor studies.
Minimum Volume: 0.75 mL (x4) platlet poor plasma
Neonatal Volume: 0.5 mL citrated plasma
Transport & Storage: Temperature/Stability: 14 days Frozen

Freeze immediately and ship on dry ice.

Methodology: See Individaul Tests
Clinical Significance: von Willebrand's disease (vWD) is perhaps the most common bleeding disorder known but the diagnosis can only be assured by performing a multiplicity of tests to #1-confirm the diagnosis; #2-be able to distinguish Type I, Type II, and Type III disease types, which require different treatment programs. Therefore it is essential to measure FVIII activity along with vWF Antigen, Functional vWF Activity by Ristocetin Cofactor and measure Multimeric analysis of von Willebrand Protein to characterize intermediate and high Weight forms.
