Clinical Significance: Smooth muscle antibodies are detected in 85% of patients with chronic active hepatitis and in less than 50% of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis. Smooth muscle antibodies are usually negative in extrahepatic biliary obstruction, drug induced liver disease, viral hepatitis
