Medical Necessity Documentation:
Client Notes:
Patient Preparation:
Specimen Requirements: 1.0 CSF  in a #4 CSF Collection Sterile Plastic Vial
and
1.0 mL Serum from a Red Top Tube in a Plastic Vial
Collection Instructions: If multiple Fluid or CSF test are being requested please specify order of importance

Serum and CSF samples should be drawn on same day for most reliable results

It is preferred that the collection date and time be the same for both CSF and Serum; however it is acceptable for them to be drawn within 48 hours of each other. CSF must be crystalline and clear.

If multiple testing is required for the CSF specimen, please list the testing priorities on the order

Blood contamination and hemolysis may interfere with results. Submitting 4th lumbar puncture collection tube minimizes blood contamination.

Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL CSF
Transport & Storage: Temperature/Stability: 5 days Refrigerated (transport)
14 days Frozen

Refrigerated CSF at 2-8°C in sterile, plastic CSF vials, and send refrigerated (Cold Packs) to lab
or
Freeze CSF specimens at -20°C and send frozen to the lab on dry ice.
Rejection Criteria: Received room temperature; xanthochromia/RBCs/hemolysis in CSF
Reference Range:
Oligoclonal Bands (IgG), CSF  Absent
The clinical significance of a numerical band count, determined by isoelectric focusing, has not been definitively defined. The data should be interpreted in conjunction with all pertinent clinical and laboratory data for this patient.
Critical Ranges:
Test Comments:
Methodology: Isoelectric Focusing
Clinical Significance: Oligoclonal bands are present in the CSF of more than 85% of patients with clinically definite multiple sclerosis (MS). To distinguish between oligoclonal bands in the CSF due to a peripheral gammopathy and oligoclonal bands due to local production in the CNS, serum and CSF should be tested simultaneously. Oligoclonal bands can however, be observed in a variety of other diseases, e.g., subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, inflammatory polyneuropathy, CNS lupus, and brain tumors and infarctions.
