Patient Preparation: Overnight fasting is required. Patient should avoid alcohol, coffee, tea, tobacco and strenuous exercise prior to collection
Specimen Requirements: (2) 4.0 mL Plasma from a Green Top Tubes - Na Heparin in a Plastic Vial
Collection Instructions:
  1. Centrifuge with 30 minutes of collection
  2. Separate plasma and transfer to clean, plastic, screw-capped vials
  3. One vial per parent tube. 
  4. Freeze immediately at -20°

Test Comments: Limitations: False-positive results have been observed in patients with either chronic kidney disease and hypertension.
Methodology: High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) • Electrochemical Detection
Clinical Significance: Plasma norepinephrine is an independent risk factor in patients with chronic congestive heart failure that relates to subsequent mortality. Norepinephrine is useful in evaluating patients with hypertension.
Documentation:  Due to stress, plasma catecholamine levels are generally unreliable in infants and small children. Urinary catecholamine assays are more reliable.
