Clinical Significance: Plasma plasminogen activator inhibitor, PAI-1 is a major inhibitor of fibrinolysis. The 4G variant (AF386492.2:g.837del) in the PAI-1 (Serpine 1) gene promoter region is associated with an increase in the level of PAI-1 in plasma. Increased levels of PAI-1 in plasma may increase the risk for arterial and venous thrombosis, myocardial infarction, and progression of atherosclerosis and also recurrent spontaneous abortion.
