Thrombin Clotting Time

Specimen Requirements: Two 1.0 mL Platelet Poor Plasma from a Blue Top Tube - 3.2% Na Citrate in 2 Plastic Vials
Collection Instructions: Centrifuge light blue-top tube 15 minutes at approx. 1500 x g within 60 minutes of collection. Using a plastic pipette, remove plasma, taking care to avoid the WBC/platelet buffy layer and place into a plastic vial. 
Centrifuge a second time and transfer platelet-poor plasma into a new plastic vial. Plasma must be free of platelets (< 10,000/mcL). Freeze immediately and ship on dry ice.
Minimum Volume: Two 0.5 mL Plasma
Transport & Storage: Temperature/Stability: 30 days Frozen (transport)
Rejection Criteria: Specimens received room temperature or refrigerated • Hemolysis
Reference Range: 13-19 seconds
Methodology: Clot detection using the Behring Coagulation System (BCS)
Documentation: Limitations: Expected impact by therapeutic levels (potential interference depends upon drug concentration): Warfarin: no effect; Heparin (UFH or LMWH): prolonged; Dabigatran or Argatroban (Thrombin Inhibitors): prolonged; Rivaroxaban or Apixaban (Factor Xa Inhibitors): no effect.
