Streptococcus Pneumoniae Antigen

Overview

  • EPIC Code:
  • LAB2156
  • Soft Test Code:
  • STRPN
Alternate Names
  • Pneumo Antigen, Urine
  • Pneumococcal Antigen
  • Strep Pneumo
  • Strep Pneumo Ag
  • Strep Pneumo Antigen, Urine
  • Urine Strep
Clinical Significance

A rapid immunochromatographic assay for the detection of Strepococcus pneumoniae antigen in the urine of patients with pneumonia. It is intended, in conjunction with culture and other methods, to aid in the diagnosis of both pneumococcal pneumonia. A positive result is positive for pneumococcal pneumonia. A negative result suggests no current or recent pneumoccal infection. Infection due to Streptococcal pneumoniae cannot be ruled out since the antigen present in the sample may be below the detection limit.
