Methodology: High Performance Liquid Chromatography
Clinical Significance: Urinary Porphobilinogen is the first step in the diagnosis of acute intermittent prophyria (AIP). Porphyria is a group of distinct disorders characterized by the abnormal accumulation of porphyrins or porphyrin precursors. Porphyrin Fractionation of Urine is useful in diagnosing porphyrin cutanea tarda, hereditary coproporphyria, and variegate porphyria.
