Now available at Parkview Huntington Hospital, NT-pro Brain-type Natriuretic Peptide (NT-pro BNP)

N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide is a cardiac hormone that can be measured in serum and heparin plasma (lithium heparin or sodium heparin). The NT-proBNP assay is used for individuals suspected of having congestive heart failure. Measurements can be used as an aid in both the diagnosis of, and assessment of the severity of the disease. It is also an aid in distinguishing congestive heart failure from other causes of dyspnea (shortness of breath/difficulty breathing) such as COPD, asthma, pneumonia or pulmonary embolism. Increased values (>125 pg/ml) may be considered positive and indicative of heart failure.
