Nasal/nasopharyngeal swab, or endocervical swab, or conjunctiva, vesicle fluid/scraping, or urethral swab, or vaginal swab, or rectal mucosal or throat swab in 3 mL Universal Viral Transport Media (VCM) (green-cap) tube

Collection Instructions

Nasal/nasopharyngeal swab, endocervical swab, eye swab or lesion (vesicle) aspirate swab, urethral swab, vaginal swab, rectal mucosal swab (without feces) or throat swab collected in Universal Viral Transport Media (VCM) (green-cap) tube or equivalent 

To maintain optimum viability, place swab into Universal Viral Transport Media (VCM) (equal volumes of fluid/tissue and Universal Viral Transport Media (VCM) or equivalent and transport the specimen to the laboratory as soon as possible.

Test Comments:

If Herpes Simplex Virus Culture, Rapid Method is "Isolated", the Type 1, Herpes simplex virus and Type 2 Herpes simplex virus will be performed at an additional charge (CPT code: 87140 (x2)).
