Clinical Significance

Helicobacter pylori has been associated with peptic ulcer disease and cancers of the gastrointestinal tract. In 1994, the U.S. National Institute of Health Consensus Development Conference concluded that H. pylori infection represents the major cause of peptic ulcer disease and antimicrobial treatment is recommended for patients with the confirmed disease.

Pure isolate collected in Brucella or Trypticase Soy Broth (TSB) with 10-20% glycerol

Reference Range:

Gram Stain - No curved Gram Negative bacilli seen
Culuture - No Helicobactor pylori isolated


Test Comments:

If Helicobacter pylori culture is Isolated, then Susceptibility, Helicobacter pylori, MIC will be performed at an additional charge (CPT code(s): 87181 x4).
