Patient Preparation

Patient should discontinue taking Biotin, Vitamin B7, or Vitamin H 48 hours before getting blood drawn.


Specimen Requirements:

1.0 mL Plasma from a PST Mint Green Top Tube - Lithium Heparin
Minimum Volume:
0.2 mL Plasma*

* This volume does not allow for repeat testing

Processing Instructions:

Specimen must be centrifuged and plasma separated from cells within 24 hours of collection.


Transport and Storage:
  • Refrigerated: 72 Hours

Patients taking vitamin supplements containing doses of >5 mg/day may have falsely decreased test results generated.

Documentation

Because of the potential for carryover, this testing cannot be added on to previously tested specimens.  A new PST specimen should be collected for any HCG or PCT order.  Testing can be added to a PST specimen that has not been previously placed on an instrument for testing.
