Specimen Requirements:

3.0 mL Whole Blood in a Lavender Top Tube - EDTA
Minimum Volume:
0.5 mL Whole Blood*

* This volume does not allow for repeat testing

Collection Instructions:

Collection requirements for ESR are by venipuncture or line draw. Capillary samples are NOT acceptable.


Processing Instructions:

Mix by inversion, but not vigorouly to avoid bubble production

Do not centrifuge


Rejection Criteria:

Clotted specimens

Hemolyzed specimens

Microtainer collection

Inadequately filled tube


Transport and Storage:
  • Ambient (18-24°C): 24 hours
  • Refrigerated (2-8°C): 48 hours

Clinical Interpretation

Reference Range:

Male: 
< 50 years: 0 - 15 mm/hr
> 50 years: 0 - 20 mm/hr

Female: 
< 50 years: 0 - 20 mm/hr
> 50 years: 0 - 30 mm/hr

 

No reference range established for children <14 years old.
