Cortisol, 4PM reference ranges are applicable to specimens collected between 3 and 5 pm. For specimens collected outside this time period, please order a Cortisol, Random (CORT)


Patient Preparation

Patient should discontinue taking Biotin, Vitamin B7, or Vitamin H 48 hours before getting blood drawn.


Specimen Requirements:

1.0 mL Serum in a SST Gold Top Tube
Minimum Volume:
0.2 mL Serum*

* This volume does not allow for repeat testing

Collection Instructions:

Must be collected between 3 and 5 pm 


Processing Instructions:

Centrifuge and separate from cells within 48 hours from collection


Transport and Storage:
  • Ambient (18-24°C): 24 Hours
  • Refrigerated (2-8°C): 4 Days
  • Frozen (-20° C or colder): 12 Months

    Do not use frost free units that undergo repeated freeze/thaw cycles

Clinical Interpretation

Reference Range:

2.4 - 12.8 ug/dL


Test Comments:

Patients taking vitamin supplements containing high doses of biotin (>5 mg/day) may have falsely increased test results generated.
