Specimen Collection & Preparation

Specimen Requirements:

-OR-

5.0 mL plasma in a BD Vacutainer® PPT™ tube from KIT
Collection Instructions:

Gently invert the tube 8 - 10 times after collection

Label the tube with patient's first and last name, a unique patient identifier (DOB or MRN), and the date and time of specimen collection.

Processing Instructions:

Centrifuged at 1100 RCF for 10 minutes at ambient temperature within 6 hours of collection

Do not transfer plasma to a separate tube

If the specimen is unlikely to reach Karius Lab within 96 hours of collection freeze speicmen directly in PPT after centrifugation

If the gel plug does not rise to separate teh cells from the plasma, the tube should be recentrifuged at a higher speed

Rejection Criteria:

Plasma separted from whole blood more than 6 hours (PPT) or more than 24 hours (K2-EDTA) after collection

Unfrozen specimen received at Karius more than 96 hours after collection

Specimen with incomplete or improper separations of plasma

Specimen collected in an expired tube

Specimen with fewer than 2 patient identifiers on the tube

Transport and Storage:
  • Ambient: 96 Hours
  • Frozen (-20 C or colder): 6 Months

If the specimen is unlikely to reach Karius Lab within 96 hours of collection freeze speicmen directly in PPT after centrifugation
