Specimen Collection & Preparation

Specimen Requirements:

1.0 mL Plasma from a Grey Top Tube - Na Fluoride K+ in a Plastic Vial
Minimum Volume:
0.5 mL Plasma*

* This volume does not allow for repeat testing

Collection Instructions:

Due to smearing of print while on ice, please label specimen following procedure and a second label in the pocket of transport bag with requisition

  1. Pre-Chill tube before collection
  2. Invert specimen 6 times 
  3. Place specimen in ice immediately after collection


Processing Instructions:

  1. Centrifuge and separate specimen iwithin 15 minutes of collection
  2. Place the separated specimen back into the ice. 
  3. Specimen can now be shipped to the laboratory in ice or frozen for transport.


Transport and Storage:
  • Refrigerated (2-8°C): 14 Days
  • Iced:
  • Frozen (-20° C or colder): 30 days

    Transport to testing laboratory

Clinical Interpretation

Reference Range:

0.4 - 2.0 mmol/L


Critical Ranges:

≥ 4.0 mmol/L
