Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Screen Culture (Nasal Only)

Client Notes

This is a culture for nasal carriage of MRSA only, and does not include susceptibilities. 

When checking for MRSA in Surface Wounds, please order test code CXAER and note Rule out MRSA: The Aerobic culture of surface wounds include aerobic pathogens and susceptibilities if appropriate. 

When checking for MRSA in the Genital Areas, please order test code CXGEN: The Genital Culture incudes screening for primarily gonorrhea and Group B Strep but also MRSA.

Specimen Overview

Adult screening: 1 eSwab of nares – use same swab to collect from both

Neonate screening: 1 eSwab of nares and umbilicus only. Rectal/perineal swabs will be rejected. Use same swab to collect from both nares, then continue to use same swab on the umbilicus.

Reference Range:

No MRSA isolated
