Clinical Significance

Cyclospora cayetanensis and Isospora belli are coccidian parasites which cause malaise, low grade fever, and diarrhea. Fatigue, anorexia, vomiting, myalgia and weight loss occur. The clinical presentation for those patients infected with either disease is similar

Patient Preparation

 Stool must not contain residual barium from diagnostic tests


Specimen Requirements:

10 grams or 10 mL fresh stool preserved in 1 single Total-Fix® transport vial
Minimum Volume:
5 grams or 5 mL*

* This volume does not allow for repeat testing

Processing Instructions:

Transfer stool within 30 minutes of collection into suitable vial.

Fill to the line on the transport vial.


Rejection Criteria:

Received Frozen

Unpreserved stool

Stool specimens preserved in transport media not listed as acceptable


Transport and Storage:
  • Ambient (18-24°C): 30 Days

    Transport 

  • Refrigerated (2-8°C): Unacceptable
  • Frozen (-20° C or colder): Unacceptable
