Specimen Requirements: 1.0 mL Serum in a SST Gold Top Tube

48 hours Refrigerated
30 days Frozen


Specimen to be transported Refrigerated to PRMC within 48 hours of collection to be frozen by Immunology department to maintain specimen integrity until testing occurs. Do not transport Frozen.
Reference Range:
OD ratio < 0.90 indicates no detectable HSV IgG antibody. Indicates no current or previous infection with HSV-1 or HSV-2.
 
OD ratio 0.91 to 1.09 is equivocal HSV IgG antibody. Suggest a new specimen be collected and retested.
 
OD ratio > 1.10 is positive for IgG antibody to HSV. It indicates a current or previous infection with HSV-1 or HSV-2 or both.
Critical Ranges:  
Test Comments:
HSV-1 and HSV-2 share many cross-reacting antigens and a majority of the antibody produced in response to an initial infection is to share antigens. HSV-1 or HSV-2 antibody test results will not indicate the site of infection. This test is not intended to replace viral isolation.
