Clinical Interpretation
Reference Range:
OD ratio < 0.90 indicates no detectable HSV IgG antibody. Indicates no current or previous infection with HSV-1 or HSV-2.
OD ratio 0.91 to 1.09 is equivocal HSV IgG antibody. Suggest a new specimen be collected and retested.
OD ratio > 1.10 is positive for IgG antibody to HSV. It indicates a current or previous infection with HSV-1 or HSV-2 or both.
Test Comments:
HSV-1 and HSV-2 share many cross-reacting antigens and a majority of the antibody produced in response to an initial infection is to share antigens. HSV-1 or HSV-2 antibody test results will not indicate the site of infection. This test is not intended to replace viral isolation.
