Specimen Requirements:

1.0 mL Plasma from a PST Mint Green Top Tube - Lithium Heparin
Minimum Volume:
0.25 mL Plasma*

* This volume does not allow for repeat testing

Collection Instructions:

Do not collect by capillary draw


Processing Instructions:

Centrifuge and separate plasma from cells within 48 hours of collection

Avoid Hemolysis

Clinical Interpretation

Reference Range:

0 to 14 days: 40-175 U/L

14 days to 1 year: 28-77 U/L

1 to 7 years: 29-53 U/L

7 to 12 years: 26-45 U/L

12 to 19 years (male): 22-44 U/L

12 to 19 years (female): 21-34 U/L

>19 years (male): 10-50 U/L

>19 years (female): 10-35 U/L


Test Comments:

For elevated results: 

Occasionally, AST might be falsely elevated due to the presence of immunoglobulin-AST-complex.  When high concentrations of serum AST are observed in the absence of organ-specific disease, high levels of AST should be investigated for the presence of immunoglobulin-complexed enzyme as a cause for such results.
