Clinical Significance

Mitochondrial antibody is present in approximately 95% of patients with Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC). Mitochondrial M2 antibody has an even higher specificity for PBC.


Specimen Collection & Preparation

Specimen Requirements:

1.0 mL Serum from a Red Top Tube in a Plastic Vial
Minimum Volume:
0.3 mL Serum*

* This volume does not allow for repeat testing

Processing Instructions:

Centrifuge and separate serum within one hour of collection


Rejection Criteria:

Gross hemolysis

Grossly icteric

Grossly lipemic

Heat-treated

Specimens containing heavy, visible particulate


Transport and Storage:
  • Ambient (18-24°C): 7 Days

  • Frozen (-20° C or colder): 30 Days

    Do not use frost free units that undergo repeated freeze/thaw cycles.

    For longer storage, freeze at -20°C or lower

> or = 25.0 units Positive
