Patient Preparation:

8 hours Fasting

Patient should discontinue taking Biotin, Vitamin B7, or Vitamin H 48 hours before getting blood drawn.

Specimen Requirements: 1.0 mL Serum in a SST Gold Top Tube
Collection Instructions: Specimen should be centrifuged within 2 hours of collection
Minimum Volume: 0.3 mL

Reference Range: 0.9-5.0 ng/mL
Critical Ranges:  
Test Comments: Patients taking vitamin supplements containing doses of >5 mg/day may have falsely decreased test results generated.
Methodology: Chemiluminescence
Clinical Significance: C-Peptide is used in newly diagnosed Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes to help determine the level of insulin the patient is producing. The results may also be used to distinguish insulin-secreting tumors from exogenous insulin. C-peptide measurements also can be used in conjunction with insulin and glucose levels to help diagnose the cause of documented hypoglycemia and to monitor its treatment.
