Patient Preparation: Patients should refrain from seafood, antacids, vitamins with mineral supplements and herbal preparation at least 3 days before collection. 
Specimen Requirements: 3.0 mL Whole Blood in a Navy Blue Top Tube - EDTA  in an Amber Vial
Collection Instructions: Specimen Must be kept in the dark
Specimens should be foil wrapped. Protect from light.
Minimum Volume: 1.5 mL
Transport & Storage: Temperature/Stability: 4 days Ambient
10 days Refrigerated
Rejection Criteria: Hemolysis • Frozen whole blood • Clotted
Reference Range: Lead = Industrial Exposure <40 mcg/dl    (mcg/dL = mcg/100g for OSHA)
Zinc = Industrial Exposure :  <100 mcg/dL

Clinical Significance: Zinc protoporphyrin accumulates in erythrocytes as a result of chronic lead absorption or iron deficiency anemia.
