Clinical Significance

The quantitative measurement of the chloride content is sweat is used to confirm the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis (CF).


Specimen Collection & Preparation

Client Notes

Sweat collection is performed by the Pediatric Pulmonary and CF Clinic and can be scheduled by contacting the clinic at 260-425-5739.


Patient Preparation

Do not use lotions or creams on the day of sweat collection.


Specimen Requirements:

20 uL Sweat in a Vial in Red Top Tube
Minimum Volume:
15 uL Sweat*

* This volume does not allow for repeat testing

Collection Instructions:

Do not pool samples if 15 uL is not obtained from a single sampling location

It is critical that the skin is free of contamination before collecting a sweat sample to be used


Rejection Criteria:

< 15 uL of sweat collected


Clinical Interpretation

Reference Range:

</= 29 mmol/L: CF unlikely
30 - 59 mmol/L: Intermediate
>/= 60 mmol/L: Indicative of CF


Critical Ranges:

>/= 30 mmol/L
