Gastric Occult Blood


Clinical Significance

Screening test for detection of occult blood, which can be useful in the early detection of gastric trauma or deteriorating gastric condition, while pH may be useful in evaluating antacid therapy.


Specimen Collection & Preparation

Client Notes

Gastric fluid sample should be delivered to the laboratory immediately after collection for the application of the gastric sample onto the Gastroccult Card.


Specimen Requirements:

2.0 mL Gastric Fluid in sterile container
Minimum Volume:
1.0 mL Gastric Fluid*

* This volume does not allow for repeat testing

Specimen Information:

Gastric aspirate obtained by nasogastric intubation or vomitus are appropriate samples for use


Collection Instructions:

Do not collect on a Hemoccult Slide


Processing Instructions:

Samples should be tested as soon as possible


Rejection Criteria:

Do not freeze


Transport and Storage:
  • Ambient (18-24°C): 24 Hours
  • Refrigerated (2-8°C): 5 Days
