Specimen Requirements: Aerobic Culture Swab (Red cap w/out gel or Red cap w/ Pledget)

The aerobic swab is the preferred specimen due to the higher sensitivity, and a less invasive collection. Nasopharyngeal collections are no longer necessary, since sample collection requirements are only 1 inch into the nares for flu. Deep NP collections are no longer necessary, even for infants

Transport & Storage: Temperature/Stability: 2 hours Ambient (preferred if on site)
24 hours refrigerator (transporting to testing site)
Rejection Criteria: Visibly bloody specimens must not be used; Calcium Alginate or Puritan Purflock™ Ultra flocked swabs
