Test Comments:
Methodology: DNA Sequencing • Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR)
Clinical Significance: Genotyping assays (HIV-1 genotype to RTI and to PRI) detect mutations that are present in the HIV reverse transcriptase and protease. This assay may not detect minor viral species that constitute less than 25% of the circulating virus population. Consultation with an expert in HIV drug resistance is encouraged to facilitate interpretation of genotype test results, and to evaluate which mutations and/or combinations of mutations are associated with drug resistance.
Documentation: An infection is often composed of a variety of strains of the virus. The test may identify only the predominant type of virus thus leaving the minority viruses to thrive once the predominant type is treated. Lack of resistance may not confer susceptibilities.
